Kailasa Parvatham with Ravana – 22" H x 21" W – Paper Mache

This large sculpted piece captures one of the most dramatic scenes in the Ramayana. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are seated together at the summit of Mount Kailasa, calm and unmoved, while below them the ten-headed Ravana is shown beneath the mountain with his many arms, holding the veena on which he sang in praise of Shiva.

The mountain itself is moulded in grey rock texture and finished on a bright orange base, with the figures hand-painted in vivid colours and gold ornamentation. Made in paper mache, the piece stays light for its size and arrives in two parts for easier handling and storage.

Significance

The scene recalls the episode in which Ravana, in his pride, attempted to lift Mount Kailasa and was pinned beneath it by Lord Shiva. Humbled, he sang in devotion until Shiva relented and granted him grace. The piece is displayed as a reminder that pride is stilled before the divine, and that sincere devotion earns compassion even from those we have wronged.
