The scene from the life of Adi Shankaracharya that gave the world the Kanakadhara Stotram – the young sanyasi at a poor woman’s door, the one gooseberry she had left to offer as alms, and Goddess Lakshmi showering gold over the humble thatched hut.

Moulded and hand-painted in clay by Indian artisans, the set arranges into a complete scene: the hut with its trees as the backdrop, the figures placed on either side, the golden shower down the centre and Lakshmi seated above. Each piece is finished by hand, so no two sets are exactly alike.

Significance

Kanakadhara means “stream of gold”. Moved by a poor woman who gave away her last gooseberry, young Shankaracharya prayed to Lakshmi, and golden gooseberries are said to have rained on her home. The set is kept for its message of generosity rewarded and is a favourite theme for Lakshmi worship during Navaratri.
